The meaning of a collection is not fixed; it changes every time an exhibition project is mounted and someone visits it. This premise serves as the starting point for *Clusters and Variations: Readings of the MACG Collection*, an interpretive exercise of the Carrillo Gil Art Museum’s collection that proposes an experimental installation to explore concepts linked to both art history and contemporary concerns. Reclaiming this museum’s mission as a space that safeguards a foundational collection of modern art while also hosting contemporary artistic expressions, the exhibition is organized around groupings of works—clusters—centered on four thematic nuclei that build bridges and foster cross-disciplinary interpretations between works of different periods and natures.
The exhibition is organized into four thematic axes, each containing brief texts that seek—rather than to define the meaning of the works—to explore possible avenues for understanding them. “Technologies of Language” explores visual scripts and various media for storing visible and legible texts, as well as the sonic dimension of works that do not necessarily produce sound. “Avant-Gardes” examines the relevance of this concept through metaphysical inquiries, constructive systems, and representations of movement. “Anthropocene” explores humanity’s impact on the planet through landscape, representations of the human figure, and the allegorical use of the animal and plant worlds.
